As part of her work with IU Student Succes Corps , a tutoring and mentoring program for students statewide, Natalie was placed at Lawrence Central High School and Thomas Carr Howe High School to work with students in the schools.
Natalie worked one-on-one with students from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and supported students with special needs. She strived to meet all students wherever they were and then support them through their academic and personal journeys, she said.
“Besides simply working on academic work and studies, I was able to set goals with them and help them plan out the steps needed to pursue their college and career needs. I loved seeing the students grow in all social, emotional, and academic domains,” Natalie said.
That work allowed her to build a rapport and strong relationships with students, she said.
Recently, Natalie was hired as the school counselor at Howe High School. She faced tough competition against other candidates with decades of experience, but school officials knew she would be the best person for the job because of her years of service, commitment to the school, and the impact she has already had on students there.
Natalie’s work with IU Student Success Corps enhanced her passion to become a school counselor, and she would recommend other students get involved with the program, she said.
“It enables one to enhance social skills and learn how to guide/reach various kids in their life journey. It is so much more than just tutoring and mentoring, and the networking opportunities are endless,” she said.
