Every year, Indianapolis is home to the nation’s oldest and largest event focused on outcomes assessment in higher education – the Assessment Institute. This event is an excellent opportunity for people new to assessment, as well at leaders in the field, to learn, share, and network. The Assessment Institute includes a track devoted specifically to community engagement assessment, but this year an additional post-institute option has been added – the Carnegie Academy. This event is an opportunity for campuses to prepare for the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement application.
Assessment Institute
Attendees of the Assessment Institute will learn about innovations in assessment that can be applied to their own campuses. Sessions that are part of the community engagement track will highlight a variety of approaches, best practices, and findings for the assessment of community engagement. Topics will include data collection, dashboards, student learning through engagement, anchor institutions, and more.
Carnegie Academy
The Carnegie Academy is designed to address one of the biggest challenges for campuses right now – systems, processes, and strategies for monitoring, tracking, evaluating, and assessing community-engaged activities. Community engagement encompasses a wide variety of activities (e.g., economic development, community development, public scholarship, community-engaged research, curricular and co-curricular experiences, programs and initiatives) and there is increasing pressure to understand the impact of community engagement for not just student learning and success but also community outcomes and faculty and staff development. This event is also timely as the 2020 application for the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement will be released in January of 2018.
Campus teams (maximum of 10 people) who will be responsible for compiling information for their 2020 Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement application are encouraged to attend. A variety of stakeholders will find benefit from this program including institutional research and assessment, student affairs, academic affairs, research, diversity, campus leadership, and government relations.
